“The unexamined life is not worth living” - Socrates
With his words etched into the history of philosophy, Socrates is known as the philosopher who brought philosophy down from the heavens to the earth. Suppose he had not shifted philosophy’s focus to humanity and taught us the importance of questioning human life. In that case, the course of philosophy, science, and even human history itself might have unfolded very differently.
We could say that the roots of professional coaching also be traced back to Socrates. The Socratic method, Elenchus, which encourages critical thinking, can be considered one of the foundational elements that breathe life into coaching, just as it has influenced many other fields. Socrates’ stance of “not knowing” in his dialogues, along with his inquisitive approach, aligns perfectly with the coaching mindset. And, of course, his belief that answers lie within the other person and that the right questions can unlock those answers is an indispensable principle of the coaching philosophy today.
At the very heart of coaching lies this great philosopher’s call to examine life. Throughout the coaching journey, we reflect on our lives and explore how we can reshape them in the direction we desire. Along the way, we discover new possibilities, different paths, and choices. And all of this unfolds in a single direction: building a life worth living.
So, what do you think makes a life worth living?
