Choosing the right coach can profoundly impact your personal and professional growth. But how do you know who’s the right fit for you? That’s where the Chemistry Session comes in—a short but powerful meeting that helps you decide whether a coach is someone you can truly trust, connect with, and grow alongside.
In professional coaching, a Chemistry Session is a free introductory meeting between the potential client and the coach.
As coaches, we place great importance on this session because it allows both parties to get to know each other and assess whether they are a good fit before starting the coaching process. The "chemistry" between the coach and the client is essential for building a strong coaching relationship—and ultimately, for conducting effective and meaningful coaching sessions.
During this meeting, we get acquainted and provide detailed information about professional coaching. Personally, I like to start by explaining what coaching is not. Clarifying that coaching is not mentoring or therapy helps set the stage for a clearer understanding of what coaching involves and how the process unfolds.
This short session—usually no more than 30 minutes—can play a key role in helping the client decide whether coaching is the right fit for them. It helps answer questions like:
✨ “Will coaching meet my needs?”
✨ “Can I genuinely open up to this person throughout the sessions?”
✨ “Do I feel safe and comfortable with them, or should I look for a different coach?”
Here’s my humble recommendation: Before making a decision, consider scheduling Chemistry Sessions with 2–3 different coaches. When choosing who to work with, pay attention not only to their coaching credentials, accreditation, and experience, but also to whether your energies align.
As I always emphasize, a trusting and supportive coaching relationship is the foundation of a successful coaching journey. Choosing someone you feel safe with and can truly open up to will make a significant difference in helping you move forward toward your goals.
In your opinion, what matters most when choosing a coach? Is it their experience, energy, credentials, or something else entirely? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! 👇
